In entertainment districts, tourists may not understand the economics of 'bar fines' — a fee (typically 500-1,000 THB) paid to the bar to allow a staff member to leave with you. On top of the bar fine, there are expected tips, 'lady drinks' charged during conversation (100-300 THB each, with staff incentivized to order many), and sometimes additional fees that were never explicitly discussed. What seems like a friendly evening can result in a bill of 5,000-15,000 THB. Misunderstandings about what is included lead to disputes, and bars generally side with their staff. This is not always a 'scam' per se but a system that relies on tourist unfamiliarity.
