"Broken meter" mid-ride scam

A taxi driver agrees to use the meter and starts the ride normally. Partway through — often when you are far from your origin and the fare would be significant — the driver claims the meter just broke or stopped working and demands a flat fee that is much higher than the metered fare would have been. Since you are already committed to the ride and may not know the area, you feel pressured to agree. Some drivers actually tamper with the meter to make it jump erratically, justifying the switch to a flat rate.
