Unofficial money exchangers found around tourist areas, night markets, and some convenience stores offer rates that look good on the board but include a hidden 'commission' or 'fee' deducted from your payout. Others use sleight-of-hand when counting bills — folding notes, counting fast, or using distraction to short you by 500-2,000 THB. Some change shops display one rate on the board but program their calculator with a worse rate. In busy bars and clubs, short-changing when giving change is also common, relying on tourists not checking their change carefully, especially after drinking.
