Around Thai Immigration offices (Chaeng Wattana in Bangkok, Phuket Town, Chiang Mai), unlicensed 'visa agents' approach tourists and expats with visa problems — overstays, extension difficulties, or work permit issues. They promise to 'guarantee' a visa extension, 'fix' an overstay without penalty, or obtain a work permit quickly for fees ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 THB. Some provide forged documents that get the tourist arrested when used. Others simply take the money and disappear. Legitimate visa services exist but are licensed and never guarantee outcomes — Thai Immigration makes the final decision. Overstay penalties are clearly defined by law and cannot be negotiated away by an agent.
