With the widespread adoption of QR code payments in Thailand (PromptPay), scammers have started placing fake QR code stickers over legitimate ones at shops, restaurants, bars, street food stalls, and even temple donation boxes. When you scan the fake QR code, your payment goes to the scammer's bank account instead of the merchant's. The merchant does not realize the switch until they check their receipts. This scam has been reported at night markets, street food areas, and small businesses that do not regularly verify their QR codes. Some scammers also print fake QR codes on flyers for 'promotions' or 'discounts.'
