Very unscrupulous rental operators — mostly found on Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, and occasionally Pai — keep a spare key for every bike they rent. While you have the bike, an accomplice uses the spare key to 'steal' it from wherever you parked. You return to find the bike gone, report it to the rental shop, and they demand you pay the full replacement value (50,000-150,000 THB). The police report works against you because it shows the bike was in your care when it was 'stolen.' Meanwhile the shop has the bike back and has collected a massive payment. This also happens with padlocked bikes where the padlock chain is cut.
